How to Convert MP4 to MP3 (Extract Audio from Video)

Pull the sound out of an MP4 video as an MP3: pick the right bitrate, trim to just the part you need, and convert several videos at once.

Want the soundtrack of a video as an audio file - a lecture to listen to on the go, a voice memo you filmed, or music from your own recording? Converting MP4 to MP3 keeps the sound and drops the picture, so the file is a fraction of the size.

Convert MP4 to MP3 online

  1. Open the MP4 to MP3 converter.
  2. Drop your videos onto the page, or click Choose Files. You can add up to 20 videos, up to 1 GB in total.
  3. Click Convert and download your MP3s.

Large videos take a little longer to upload; the conversion itself is quick.

Pick the right quality

Click the settings button next to the format to change the audio bitrate:

  • 128 kbps: speech, lectures, podcasts. Small files.
  • 192 kbps: music. A good default.
  • 320 kbps: the highest MP3 quality, for music you care about.

Choosing a higher bitrate than the video's own soundtrack makes the file bigger without making it sound better.

Keep only the part you need

In the same settings you can set a start and end time to trim the audio, adjust the volume, or add a short fade in and fade out. That's handy for a ringtone or one song from a longer recording.

MP3 or WAV?

MP3 is the best choice for listening and sharing: small and playable everywhere. If you'll edit the audio in a program like Audacity, convert to WAV instead. It's much bigger but has no quality loss, so your edits start from the best copy.

Already have audio files in another format? M4A to MP3 handles iPhone voice memos and many podcast downloads.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about using RunConvert to convert your files.

192 kbps sounds good for music and is a sensible default. 128 kbps is plenty for speech such as lectures or podcasts. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality.

Yes. Open the settings next to the format and set a start and end time to trim the audio.

Only convert videos you own or have permission to use. Downloading from streaming sites is often against their terms.

No. Converting can't add quality that isn't in the video's soundtrack, so choosing a bitrate higher than the original won't improve it.
