How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone, Mac and Windows

Four ways to turn iPhone HEIC photos into JPG: online, on the iPhone itself, with Preview on a Mac and on Windows - plus how to make your iPhone save JPG from now on.

HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default. It keeps files small, but many Windows PCs, Android apps, websites and upload forms can't open it. Converting HEIC to JPG gives you a photo that works everywhere.

Convert HEIC to JPG online

The quickest way, and the same on every device:

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter.
  2. Drop your HEIC photos onto the page, or click Choose Files. Add up to 20 at once.
  3. Click Convert and download your JPGs.

No account and no watermark. Need a copy with no quality loss? Use HEIC to PNG. Sending scanned documents? HEIC to PDF gives you PDFs instead.

On iPhone: share it as JPG

iOS converts HEIC to JPG for you when you share a photo to an app or website that needs it. To get JPG files on purpose:

  1. In Photos, select the photos and tap Share › Copy Photos.
  2. Open the Files app, go to a folder, then touch and hold an empty space and tap Paste.

The pasted copies are JPG.

On a Mac: Preview

  1. Open the HEIC photo in Preview.
  2. Choose File › Export.
  3. Set Format to JPEG, pick a quality and click Save.

To convert several photos, select them all in Preview's sidebar first, then export.

On Windows

Windows 10 and 11 can show HEIC photos once the HEIF Image Extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store. To save a JPG copy, open the photo in Paint and choose File › Save as › JPEG picture. For more than a few photos, the online converter above is much quicker.

Make your iPhone save JPG instead

If you'd rather not convert at all, go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG. They take up more space, so keep High Efficiency if storage is tight.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about using RunConvert to convert your files.

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it takes roughly half the space of a JPG at the same quality. You can switch the camera to JPG in Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible.

JPG is a lossy format, but at a high quality setting the difference is very hard to see. If you need a copy with no quality loss for editing, convert to PNG instead.

Yes. Add up to 20 HEIC photos to the HEIC to JPG converter in one go.

Photo details such as the date taken are kept unless you choose to remove metadata in the settings. Removing it is a good idea before you post photos publicly, because it also removes the location.
