Sending a CV, an invoice or a form? A PDF is the safer choice: it looks the same on every phone and computer, and the person you send it to can't change it by accident. Here's how to turn a Word document (DOC or DOCX) into a PDF.

Convert Word to PDF online

The same steps work on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android:

  1. Open the Word to PDF converter.
  2. Drop your Word files onto the page, or click Choose Files.
  3. Click Convert, then download your PDFs.

You can convert up to 20 documents at once, up to 1 GB in total. No account is needed, and files are deleted automatically after conversion.

In Microsoft Word

On Windows:

  1. Open the document and choose File › Save As.
  2. Pick PDF in the list of file types.
  3. Click Save.

On a Mac, choose File › Save As and set File Format to PDF.

In Google Docs

  1. Open the document in Google Docs (Word files open there directly from Google Drive).
  2. Choose File › Download › PDF Document (.pdf).

Get the layout right

Most problems with Word-to-PDF come from the document, not the conversion. Before you convert:

  • Fonts: unusual fonts can be swapped for a similar one if they aren't available. Standard fonts such as Calibri, Arial or Times New Roman are always safe.
  • Track changes and comments: accept or reject changes and delete comments first, or they may appear in the PDF.
  • Page size: check Layout › Size is set to the paper size you need (A4 or Letter).

Need to edit it again later?

Keep the original Word file. If you only have the PDF, the PDF to Word converter turns it back into an editable document.
