What is an SK1 file?

The SK1 format is a vector graphics file type associated with the sK1 open-source illustration program, originally forked from the Skencil project. It stores graphics using a Python-based object model and emphasizes prepress requirements, specifically supporting CMYK color spaces, ICC color management, and separation printing features often lacking in similar open-source formats like SVG. The internal structure is proprietary to the sK1 engine, designed to handle complex vector nodes, bezier curves, and text objects for professional publishing workflows on Linux and Unix-like systems.

How to open an SK1 file

Native support for SK1 files is virtually non-existent on standard Windows or macOS installations. Opening these files requires the sK1 vector graphics editor or the UniConvertor command-line tool, both developed by the sK1 Project. For viewing or converting without the original software, Inkscape can often import SK1 files if the UniConvertor dependency is correctly installed on the host system.

What is a WMF file?

Windows Metafile (WMF) is a 16-bit graphics file format originally introduced in Windows 3.0 (1990) to store a sequence of Graphics Device Interface (GDI) function calls. Unlike pure bitmaps, WMFs contain instructions for drawing vector lines and circles, though they can also encapsulate raster images. The format suffers from device-dependence and lacks the color handling capabilities of its 32-bit successor, Enhanced Metafile (EMF), leading to its deprecation in modern development.

How to open a WMF file

Due to its legacy status, WMF is natively supported by the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Microsoft Paint. For professional editing and conversion, vector graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and Inkscape (using UniConvertor) is recommended. On Linux, the libwmf library enables support within the GIMP and ImageMagick suites.
