What is an SVG file?
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an XML-based vector image format for two-dimensional graphics with support for interactivity and animation. Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) since 1999, SVG is an open standard that describes images using text-based XML markup, allowing them to be indexed, scripted, and compressed. Unlike raster formats, SVG images are resolution-independent, relying on mathematical paths (vectors) rather than pixels, making them essential for responsive web design and high-DPI displays.
How to open an SVG file
SVG files are natively supported by all modern web browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari, which render the XML data directly. for editing, users require vector graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, or CorelDRAW. Plain text editors like VS Code or Notepad++ can also open SVG files to view and modify the underlying XML source code.

What is a WMF file?
Windows Metafile (WMF) is a 16-bit graphics file format originally introduced in Windows 3.0 (1990) to store a sequence of Graphics Device Interface (GDI) function calls. Unlike pure bitmaps, WMFs contain instructions for drawing vector lines and circles, though they can also encapsulate raster images. The format suffers from device-dependence and lacks the color handling capabilities of its 32-bit successor, Enhanced Metafile (EMF), leading to its deprecation in modern development.
How to open a WMF file
Due to its legacy status, WMF is natively supported by the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Microsoft Paint. For professional editing and conversion, vector graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and Inkscape (using UniConvertor) is recommended. On Linux, the libwmf library enables support within the GIMP and ImageMagick suites.
