XLSB to PDFA Converter

The XLSB (Excel Binary Workbook) format is a binary implementation of the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard, introduced with Microsoft Office 2007. Unlike XLSX, which parses XML text files, XLSB stores data in binary parts within a ZIP container, resulting in faster load times and reduced file size for massive datasets containing complex formulas. It supports all Excel features, including VBA macros, but is less interoperable with non-Microsoft parsers due to its binary nature.

Opening XLSB files requires Microsoft Excel 2007 or later for optimal performance and macro execution. While Windows and macOS rely on the Office suite, Linux users can utilize LibreOffice Calc, which supports reading and writing XLSB files, though execution of embedded proprietary VBA macros may be limited or require code adjustments.

PDF/A is an ISO-standardized (ISO 19005) variant of the PDF format designed specifically for long-term digital archiving. It embeds all fonts, color profiles, and metadata directly inside the file and prohibits external dependencies, encryption, and JavaScript, ensuring the document will render identically decades from now regardless of which software or fonts are available on the viewing system. It's widely required for legal, government, and institutional record-keeping.

PDF/A files open in any standard PDF viewer, including Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple Preview, and built-in browser PDF viewers, since the format is fully backward-compatible with regular PDF readers. Dedicated archival software such as Adobe Acrobat Pro can also validate that a file meets PDF/A compliance.
