What is an X3F file?

The X3F file extension represents a raw image format generated exclusively by Sigma digital cameras utilizing the Foveon X3 direct image sensor. Unlike traditional Bayer filter sensors that interpolate color data, the Foveon X3 captures red, green, and blue light at every pixel location in three vertical layers of silicon. The X3F file contains this uncompressed or losslessly compressed raw sensor data alongside a JPEG preview and proprietary metadata, requiring specific demosaicing algorithms to interpret the vertical color information.

How to open an X3F file

Processing X3F files requires specialized raw conversion software capable of interpreting Foveon sensor data. Sigma's proprietary software, Sigma Photo Pro, provides the most accurate rendering. Third-party support is available in Adobe Lightroom (via Camera Raw) and open-source alternatives like Darktable and RawTherapee. Standard operating system image viewers generally cannot decode the raw X3F stream and will often only display the embedded JPEG thumbnail.

What is a GIF file?

The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a bitmap image format developed by CompuServe in 1987, distinguished by its use of the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression algorithm. It supports up to 8 bits per pixel, allowing a palette of 256 distinct colors selected from the 24-bit RGB color space. The GIF89a specification, introduced in 1989, added support for transparent backgrounds, animation delays, and application extensions, establishing it as a standard for simple web animations and low-color graphics.

How to open a GIF file

GIF files possess near-universal compatibility and can be opened natively by all modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) and default operating system viewers like Microsoft Photos and Apple Preview. No third-party software is typically required for viewing. For editing frame-by-frame animations or modifying color palettes, raster graphics editors such as GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, or online tools like Ezgif are required.
