What is a VSDM file?

The VSDM format is a macro-enabled drawing file associated with Microsoft Visio 2013 and later versions. It follows the Open Packaging Conventions (OPC) and is structured as a ZIP archive containing XML files, similar to the standard VSDX format, but with explicit permission to execute embedded Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros. This distinction is a security feature, isolating potentially malicious code from the standard, macro-free VSDX files. The format allows for complex automation and scripted behaviors within diagrams.

How to open a VSDM file

Opening VSDM files requires Microsoft Visio 2013 or later for full functionality, particularly to execute the embedded macros. Due to security risks, users often must explicitly enable macro execution upon opening. For viewing only (without macro functionality), Microsoft Visio Viewer or LibreOffice Draw can be used. Third-party tools like Lucidchart may import the visual vectors but will invariably strip the VBA macro code.

What is a PNG file?

Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression, created as a patent-free replacement for the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). Standardized as ISO/IEC 15948:2004, PNG utilizes the DEFLATE compression algorithm (a combination of LZ77 and Huffman coding) and supports palette-based images, grayscale, and full-color non-palette-based RGB/RGBA images. A defining feature is its alpha channel support, allowing for variable transparency levels, unlike the binary transparency of GIF. It does not support animation but offers gamma correction and interlacing via the Adam7 algorithm.
