Located within the VIDEO_TS directory of a DVD, a VOB file multiplexes MPEG-2 video streams, audio streams (formats including Linear PCM, AC-3, or DTS), and subtitle streams (subpictures) into a single datastream. The format supports copy protection via the Content Scramble System (CSS) and functions as the core delivery mechanism for standard-definition digital video on optical discs.
How to open a VOB file
VOB files are natively supported by standalone DVD players and computer software designed for DVD playback, such as CyberLink PowerDVD. On standard operating systems without dedicated DVD software, the format can be opened using the VLC media player, GOM Player, or MPC-HC, which contain the necessary MPEG-2 decoders. Users may need to open the associated IFO files to navigate menus properly rather than playing raw VOB segments.
