What is a tar.lzo file?

The tar.lzo format combines the POSIX-compliant Tape Archive (tar) container with Lempel-Ziv-Oberhumer (LZO) lossless compression. Developed by Markus F.X.J. Oberhumer, the LZO algorithm utilizes an LZ77-based approach prioritized for extremely fast decompression speeds rather than maximal compression ratios. The file structure encapsulates a standard uncompressed tarball within an LZO stream, allowing for rapid real-time data extraction often used in embedded systems or disk cloning operations where CPU throughput is the bottleneck.

How to open a tar.lzo file

Native support for tar.lzo is limited on standard operating system kernels without specific libraries. On Linux, users can extract these archives using the GNU tar command combined with the lzop package (command: tar --lzop -xf file.tar.lzo). For Windows users, 7-Zip does not natively support LZO; therefore, PeaZip is the recommended technical solution as it integrates the necessary lzop binaries. macOS users can utilize The Unarchiver or install lzop via Homebrew.
