The RZ file extension is generated by rzip, a compression program developed by Andrew Tridgell designed to handle large files with long-distance redundancy. Unlike standard Deflate or Bzip2 algorithms that use limited history buffers, rzip utilizes a 900 MB history buffer to identify and compress duplicate data chunks separated by substantial distances within the file. The internal structure involves a two-stage process: finding long-distance matches using a rolling checksum algorithm, followed by a backend compression stage typically utilizing bzip2 to encode the local data streams.

RZ files are not natively supported by standard Windows or macOS archive utilities. They require the rzip command-line tool, primarily available on Linux and Unix-like systems, to decompress (using the -d flag). For Windows users, interacting with RZ files often requires a Cygwin environment or a Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) installation to access the necessary rzip binary, as standard GUI archivers like WinRAR or 7-Zip do not support this specific format.
