RW2 to PNG Converter

The RW2 file extension is the successor to the RAW format, used exclusively for raw images produced by Panasonic Lumix digital cameras. It stores unprocessed data from the image sensor along with a unique header containing metadata such as lens information, shutter speed, ISO settings, and color profile tags. The format allows for non-destructive editing by saving parameter adjustments as sidecar files or database entries rather than altering the original pixel data. It typically employs a proprietary lossless compression algorithm.

RW2 files are supported by professional post-production software including Adobe Photoshop (Camera Raw plugin), Adobe Lightroom, and DxO PhotoLab. Panasonic bundles the SILKYPIX Developer Studio software with their cameras for native decoding. Windows 10 and 11 users can view these files in the Photos app after installing the Raw Image Extension. macOS users can preview and edit RW2 files natively through the Preview app and Photos app, leveraging Apple's system-level raw engine.

Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression, created as a patent-free replacement for the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). Standardized as ISO/IEC 15948:2004, PNG utilizes the DEFLATE compression algorithm (a combination of LZ77 and Huffman coding) and supports palette-based images, grayscale, and full-color non-palette-based RGB/RGBA images. A defining feature is its alpha channel support, allowing for variable transparency levels, unlike the binary transparency of GIF. It does not support animation but offers gamma correction and interlacing via the Adam7 algorithm.

PNG files possess near-universal compatibility across all major operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) and web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) without requiring additional software. Default image viewers such as Microsoft Photos, Apple Preview, and virtually all graphics editing software including GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, and Paint.NET natively handle the format.
