What is a RAF file?

The RAF extension identifies a raw image file generated by Fujifilm digital cameras. It contains unprocessed data directly from the camera's image sensor-typically Fujifilm's proprietary X-Trans CMOS or standard Bayer filter arrays-along with a JPEG preview and Exif metadata. The file structure encapsulates the sensor's exact luminance values and color information before demosaicing or gamma correction is applied. This format allows for extensive post-processing flexibility regarding white balance, exposure, and color grading compared to compressed formats.

How to open a RAF file

To view or edit RAF files, users require software capable of interpreting the specific sensor data mapped in the file header. Fujifilm provides 'Fujifilm X RAW STUDIO' for native processing. Industry-standard applications such as Adobe Lightroom Classic, Capture One, and the open-source RawTherapee support RAF decoding. Microsoft Windows users may need to install the 'Raw Image Extension' package, while macOS Preview possesses built-in support for most RAF iterations via Apple's Core Image framework.

What is a PSD file?

The Photoshop Document (PSD) is the proprietary file format of Adobe Photoshop, capable of storing an image with support for all available imaging options including layers, adjustment layers, layer masks, alpha channels, paths, and vector text. It utilizes Run-Length Encoding (RLE) for compression and allows for a maximum file size of 2 GB and dimensions up to 30,000 pixels. The format maintains the editing history and non-destructive elements of a project, unlike flattened raster formats. The internal structure is divided into five parts: File Header, Color Mode Data, Image Resources, Layer and Mask Information, and Image Data.

How to open a PSD file

Adobe Photoshop is the primary software for full PSD support. However, several other programs offer varying degrees of compatibility. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and Paint.NET (with a plugin) can open PSD files but may not render complex layer styles or adjustment layers correctly. CorelDRAW and Affinity Photo also provide robust support. For simple viewing without editing, standard image viewers like XnView or IrfanView can often display the flattened composite preview embedded within the file.
