What is a PPSX file?

The PPSX (PowerPoint Open XML Slide Show) format is a presentation file introduced by Microsoft with Office 2007, adhering to the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard (ISO/IEC 29500). It acts as a read-only slideshow version of the PPTX format, launching directly into presentation view rather than the editing interface. Structurally, it is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that define slide layouts, themes, and content, but it explicitly excludes the vbaProject.bin part found in macro-enabled variants, ensuring it cannot execute code.

How to open a PPSX file

Native support for PPSX is built into Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and newer versions on Windows and macOS. To edit a PPSX file rather than view it, users must open PowerPoint first and select the file via the 'Open' menu. Alternative software includes LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides, and Apple Keynote, all of which can parse the OOXML structure, though some transition animations may not render identically to the Microsoft engine.
