What is a PPM file?
The Portable Pixel Map (PPM) format is a lowest-common-denominator color image format developed by Jef Poskanzer as part of the Netpbm project. It stores pixels as uncompressed RGB triplets (Red, Green, Blue) in either a plain ASCII text format (P3 header) or a more efficient binary format (P6 header). The file structure is extremely minimal, consisting of a magic number identifier, dimensions (width and height), maximum color value, and the pixel data itself, making it easily parsable by simple scripts but inefficient for storage compared to compressed formats like JPEG or PNG.
How to open a PPM file
Native support for PPM files is absent in standard Windows or macOS photo viewers. Users typically require specialized image manipulation software to view or convert these files. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and IrfanView are the primary tools for opening PPM files on desktop environments. On Linux systems, the Netpbm toolkit and ImageMagick suite provide command-line utilities for processing and converting PPM data.

What is an EPS file?
The EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format is a legacy vector graphics standard developed by Adobe in the late 1980s. It contains PostScript page description language commands describing 2D vector graphics, bitmap images, and text. Conforming to the Document Structuring Conventions (DSC), an EPS file includes a BoundingBox comment that defines the rectangular area of the graphic. It is strictly a single-page format intended to be embedded within other PostScript documents, often containing a low-resolution TIFF or WMF preview for onscreen display.
How to open an EPS file
While native OS support for EPS is deprecated in modern Windows and macOS (Preview no longer supports it as of macOS Monterey), professional vector editors are required for manipulation. Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW are the industry standards for editing EPS syntax. For viewing or rasterizing without expensive software, users can utilize Ghostscript, Inkscape (open source), or EPS Viewer. Converting to PDF is often recommended for broader accessibility.
