What is a PAGES file?
A PAGES file is a proprietary document format created by the Apple Pages word processing application, part of the iWork productivity suite. The internal structure has evolved significantly; early versions used a ZIP-compressed bundle containing an XML index, while versions released after iWork '13 utilize a proprietary binary format (often involving Protobuf) and Snappy compression. The format encapsulates rich text, layout specifications, and image assets, strictly tied to the macOS and iOS rendering engines.
How to open a PAGES file
The format is natively supported only by Apple Pages on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. Users on Windows or Linux cannot open the file directly; they must utilize iCloud.com in a web browser to view and edit the document, or use the 'Export' function within the Pages application to convert the file to an interoperable format like PDF or DOCX.

What is a DOCM file?
A DOCM file is a macro-enabled document created by Microsoft Word (2007 and later), compliant with the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard (ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500). Structurally, it is a zipped archive containing XML files for content and styles, identical to the DOCX format, but with the specific distinction that it is authorized to execute Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros stored within a vbaProject.bin part. This separation ensures security by preventing macro execution in standard DOCX files.
How to open a DOCM file
Opening DOCM files requires software capable of parsing OOXML and executing VBA scripts. Microsoft Word is the standard environment for full functionality. LibreOffice Writer and WPS Office can open DOCM files and display content, but support for executing the embedded proprietary VBA macros may be limited or require code refactoring. Security settings in most software will disable macros by default upon opening to prevent malicious code execution.
