What is a NUMBERS file?
A NUMBERS file is a spreadsheet document created by Apple Numbers, part of the iWork productivity suite. The format is based on a bundled package structure (a directory appearing as a file) or a single-file ZIP container (in recent versions), containing an Index.xml (or .iwa protobuf stream), metadata plist files, and embedded assets like images. It utilizes a canvas-based approach rather than a strict grid, allowing multiple isolated tables and distinct media objects on a single sheet.
How to open a NUMBERS file
This format is proprietary to the Apple ecosystem, with native support exclusively on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS via the Apple Numbers app. Windows users cannot open these files natively and must utilize iCloud.com to view or convert the file to Excel (XLSX) format. Some third-party conversion tools can extract the internal XML data, but rendering is often imperfect outside the iWork environment.

What is an ODS file?
The OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) format is an XML-based file standard for spreadsheets, maintained by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). Standardized as ISO/IEC 26300, ODS utilizes a ZIP-compressed container holding separate XML files for content (content.xml), styles, and metadata. It serves as the native file format for the LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice suites, offering a vendor-neutral alternative to proprietary formats by strictly adhering to the OpenDocument Format (ODF) specifications.
How to open an ODS file
ODS files are natively supported by open-source suites such as LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice on Linux, Windows, and macOS. Microsoft Excel (versions 2007 SP2 and later) includes built-in support for opening and saving ODS files, though some formatting variations may occur due to ODF version differences. Google Sheets also provides cloud-based support for importing and editing this format.
