What is an MTS file?

The MTS file extension denotes a high-definition video file formatted in the Advanced Video Coding High Definition (AVCHD) format. It utilizes the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (MPEG-2 TS) container structure to encapsulate video data compressed with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and audio in Dolby Digital (AC-3) or uncompressed LPCM. Developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic for consumer camcorders, MTS files support resolutions up to 1080p and 60 frames per second. When imported from a camera to a computer, the file extension often changes to M2TS.

How to open an MTS file

Native support for MTS varies by OS version. Windows 10 and 11 generally support AVCHD playback via the Movies & TV app, provided the necessary MPEG-2 extensions are installed. macOS plays MTS files natively in QuickTime. For editing or reliable playback across all platforms, including Linux, VLC Media Player is preferred as it handles the H.264 video and AC-3 audio streams without requiring external codec packs.

What is a GIF file?

The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a bitmap image format developed by CompuServe in 1987, distinguished by its use of the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression algorithm. It supports up to 8 bits per pixel, allowing a palette of 256 distinct colors selected from the 24-bit RGB color space. The GIF89a specification, introduced in 1989, added support for transparent backgrounds, animation delays, and application extensions, establishing it as a standard for simple web animations and low-color graphics.

How to open a GIF file

GIF files possess near-universal compatibility and can be opened natively by all modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) and default operating system viewers like Microsoft Photos and Apple Preview. No third-party software is typically required for viewing. For editing frame-by-frame animations or modifying color palettes, raster graphics editors such as GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, or online tools like Ezgif are required.
