What is an LZO file?

The LZO (Lempel-Ziv-Oberhumer) format represents data compressed using the LZO library, a lossless data compression algorithm developed by Markus F.X.J. Oberhumer. Unlike algorithms optimizing for space, LZO prioritizes decompression speed, suitable for real-time applications and data streaming. The file format typically acts as a container for data blocks compressed with LZO1X or related variants, focusing on extremely fast decompression and low memory footprint rather than maximum compression ratios. It is often generated by the lzop utility, which wraps the raw LZO stream with a header containing checksums (Adler-32 or CRC-32) and file metadata.

How to open an LZO file

Opening LZO files requires software that implements the LZO library. On Linux and Unix-like systems, the lzop command-line utility is the standard tool for extraction. Windows users lack native support and must rely on third-party utilities such as PeaZip or Universal Extractor which integrate the LZO decompression libraries. 7-Zip can open LZO archives if the requisite plugins are installed or if the file is a tar.lzo container.

What is a TAR file?

The TAR (Tape Archive) format is a file format standardized by POSIX.1-1988 and later POSIX.1-2001 (pax), originally developed for writing data to sequential I/O devices like magnetic tape drives. Unlike modern archive formats, TAR is purely a container format that concatenates multiple files into a single archive without native compression, preserving file system attributes such as user/group permissions, dates, and directory structures. It is frequently paired with compression utilities like Gzip or Bzip2 in Unix-like environments.

How to open a TAR file

Most Unix-based systems (Linux, macOS, BSD) include native support via the GNU Tar command-line utility. Windows does not natively support TAR extraction in versions prior to Windows 10 (Build 17063), requiring third-party tools. For cross-platform compatibility, 7-Zip and WinRAR are standard utilities for inspecting and extracting TAR containers.
