What is a LIT file?
The LIT format is a discontinued proprietary eBook format developed by Microsoft for the Microsoft Reader software. It utilizes the ITOL/ITSOL storage format, effectively wrapping HTML content and OEB (Open eBook) metadata within a Microsoft CHM-based container optimized for ClearType display technology. LIT files often utilize Digital Rights Management (DRM) encryption, restricting access to authorized devices linked to a specific Microsoft Passport account.
How to open a LIT file
Microsoft discontinued the native Microsoft Reader application in 2012, removing OS-level support. To view LIT files today, Calibre is the primary software solution, capable of reading non-DRM files and converting them to modern formats. For legacy compatibility, users may attempt to run the original Microsoft Reader executable in compatibility mode on older Windows versions.
