What is an ISO file?

An ISO file, technically known as an ISO 9660 file system image, is a sector-by-sector binary replica of data on an optical disc. Governed by the International Organization for Standardization, this uncompressed archive encapsulates the exact digital structure of a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray, including the file system metadata, boot code headers, and attributes required for software distribution and operating system installation. While originally based on the ISO 9660 standard, modern ISO files often utilize the Universal Disk Format (UDF) specification to support larger file sizes and varying optical media types.

How to open an ISO file

Modern operating systems, including Windows 10/11, macOS, and Linux distributions, possess native kernel support to 'mount' ISO images as virtual drives. In Windows, this is achieved via File Explorer, while macOS uses the DiskImageMounter utility to render the file as a readable volume. For older OS versions lacking native mounting capabilities, or to extract the binary contents without mounting, third-party virtualization software such as WinCDEmu or archival tools like 7-Zip and WinRAR are required to parse the container.
