The format typically utilizes lossless compression or uncompressed storage to maintain data integrity for post-production, requiring specific Bayer interpolation algorithms to render viewable images.

ERF files are not natively viewable in standard Windows or macOS image viewers without codec extensions. JPG is functionally identical to the JPEG format, differing only in the file extension length, a legacy constraint from the MS-DOS 8.3 filename limit (which allowed only three characters for extensions).
