What is a DSS file?
The Digital Speech Standard (DSS) is a proprietary compressed audio file format defined by the International Voice Association (IVA), a joint venture between Olympus, Grundig, and Philips. Released in 1997, it utilizes a lossy compression algorithm optimized specifically for human voice frequencies to enable high compression ratios for digital dictation recorders. The format supports metadata headers for dictation workflow (e.g., author ID, work type) and allows for overwrite/insert recording modes, distinguishing it from standard linear audio formats.
How to open a DSS file
DSS files are designed for proprietary transcription software such as the Olympus DSS Player or Philips SpeechExec. For general playback without purchasing professional dictation software, the VLC media player (v2.0+) offers partial support. However, for full compatibility and metadata access, users often need to convert the file to WAV using the free 'Olympus DSS Player Lite' or similar vendor-supplied utilities.
