What is a DOT file?
The DOT file extension represents a legacy Microsoft Word Document Template utilized by Word 97 through 2003. Based on the proprietary Microsoft Object Linking and Embedding (OLE2) binary interchange format, DOT files store structural blueprints—including styles, AutoText entries, macros, and toolbar customizations—to standardize document creation. Unlike the modern XML-based Office Open XML standard, DOT relies on binary sector storage streams and acts as the predecessor to the DOTX and DOTM formats. These files are susceptible to macro viruses due to their ability to execute embedded Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) scripts.
How to open a DOT file
Native support for DOT files is embedded in all versions of Microsoft Word, though modern iterations (Word 2007 and later) will open them in Compatibility Mode. For users without a Microsoft Office license, the format can be parsed by open-source office suites such as Apache OpenOffice Writer and LibreOffice Writer. Google Docs also provides conversion capabilities for viewing and editing DOT contents within a web browser environment.
