What is a CBZ file?

A CBZ (Comic Book Zip) file is a compressed archive format designed for the sequential viewing of images, typically digital comic books. It essentially consists of a standard ZIP archive containing a series of image files (JPEG, PNG, GIF) ordered alphanumerically, sometimes accompanied by XML metadata (ComicInfo.xml) for cataloging. The format relies on the DEFLATE compression algorithm defined in ISO/IEC 21320-1 and functions purely as a container, requiring no specialized header beyond the standard PKZIP signature.

How to open a CBZ file

Since CBZ files are renamed ZIP archives, they can be opened by renaming the extension to .zip and extracting the contents via native OS tools like Windows Explorer or macOS Archive Utility. For sequential rendering, specialized e-readers are required; CDisplayEx is widely used on Windows, while MComix serves Linux environments, and YACReader is compatible across multiple platforms.

What is an RTF file?

The Rich Text Format (RTF) is a proprietary document file format with published specifications developed by Microsoft Corporation in 1987 for cross-platform document interchange. It encodes formatted text and graphics using 7-bit ASCII characters, utilizing a structure of control words, control symbols, and groups to define formatting properties such as bolding, italics, and fonts. Unlike binary formats, RTF is human-readable and was designed to facilitate interoperability between different word processing software and operating systems before the standardization of XML-based formats.

How to open an RTF file

Due to its design as an interchange format, RTF possesses native support across almost all major operating systems without requiring third-party installation. Microsoft Windows opens RTF files natively with WordPad or Microsoft Word, while macOS utilizes TextEdit. For Linux users or cross-platform consistency, LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice provide robust handling of the format's styling attributes.
