What is a CBR file?
The CBR (Comic Book RAR) format is a compressed archive used for viewing sequential images, primarily digital comic books. It consists of a set of raster images (JPEG, PNG, GIF) compressed using the Roshal Archive (RAR) algorithm and renamed with the .cbr extension. The format relies on alphanumeric filename sorting to determine page order and does not natively support standard metadata headers, distinguishing it from XML-based formats like EPUB. Compression efficiency depends on the RAR version (v4 or v5) utilized during creation.
How to open a CBR file
CBR files require dedicated comic book readers or RAR-compatible decompression tools. Recommended software includes CDisplay Ex or SumatraPDF for Windows, YACReader for macOS and Linux, and Chunky for iOS. Alternatively, renaming the file extension from .cbr to .rar allows standard utilities like WinRAR or 7-Zip to extract the raw image files for manual viewing.
