ARW to PNG Converter

The ARW (Sony Alpha Raw) format is a proprietary raw image container generated by Sony Alpha, Cyber-shot, and NEX series digital cameras. It adheres to the TIFF (Tag Image File Format) specification, storing unprocessed photodiode data from the image sensor in either uncompressed, lossless compressed, or lossy compressed (11-bit + 7-bit delta) variations. The file encapsulates extensive EXIF metadata, maker notes, and a JPEG preview, requiring specific demosaicing algorithms to interpret the Bayer pattern data for display.

Opening ARW files requires software capable of decoding Sony's proprietary Bayer interpretation. Sony provides the free Imaging Edge Desktop software for native handling. Industry-standard post-production tools such as Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, and DxO PhotoLab offer full support. On Windows, the Microsoft Raw Image Extension allows native viewing in the Photos app, while macOS Preview supports most ARW iterations natively via Apple's Core Image RAW engine.

Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression, created as a patent-free replacement for the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). Standardized as ISO/IEC 15948:2004, PNG utilizes the DEFLATE compression algorithm (a combination of LZ77 and Huffman coding) and supports palette-based images, grayscale, and full-color non-palette-based RGB/RGBA images. A defining feature is its alpha channel support, allowing for variable transparency levels, unlike the binary transparency of GIF. It does not support animation but offers gamma correction and interlacing via the Adam7 algorithm.

PNG files possess near-universal compatibility across all major operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) and web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) without requiring additional software. Default image viewers such as Microsoft Photos, Apple Preview, and virtually all graphics editing software including GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, and Paint.NET natively handle the format.
