What is an AC3 file?

The AC3 format, technically known as Dolby Digital, is a perceptual audio coding standard developed by Dolby Laboratories and standardized under ATSC A/52. It employs the Modified Discrete Cosine Transform (MDCT) algorithm to compress audio data, supporting channel configurations ranging from mono up to 5.1 discrete surround sound channels (left, center, right, left-surround, right-surround, and LFE). AC3 is the standard audio track format for DVD-Video, Blu-ray Disc, and ATSC/DVB digital television broadcasting, utilizing metadata parameters like dialnorm to control dynamic range.

How to open an AC3 file

While modern Windows versions may decode AC3 natively within specific container formats, raw AC3 files often require third-party software due to licensing restrictions on the Dolby codec. VLC Media Player is the primary recommendation for opening AC3 files on Windows, macOS, and Linux, as it includes built-in A/52 decoders. Alternatively, users may install the K-Lite Codec Pack or use MPC-HC (Media Player Classic Home Cinema) to enable system-wide support for Dolby Digital streams.
