What is a WPS file?
A WPS file is the default document format for Microsoft Works Word Processor, a simplified productivity suite discontinued in 2009. The format consists of a binary structure that varies significantly between software versions (Works 2.0 through 9.0), containing rich text, headers, and basic layout information. It lacks the advanced macro and XML schema support found in the contemporary DOC and DOCX formats.
How to open a WPS file
As Microsoft Works is deprecated, modern native OS support is non-existent. Microsoft Word 2016 and earlier versions included a Works 6-9 file converter. For current systems, LibreOffice Writer is the standard alternative, offering robust interpretation of the legacy binary format via the libwps import filter.

What is a DOCM file?
A DOCM file is a macro-enabled document created by Microsoft Word (2007 and later), compliant with the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard (ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500). Structurally, it is a zipped archive containing XML files for content and styles, identical to the DOCX format, but with the specific distinction that it is authorized to execute Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros stored within a vbaProject.bin part. This separation ensures security by preventing macro execution in standard DOCX files.
How to open a DOCM file
Opening DOCM files requires software capable of parsing OOXML and executing VBA scripts. Microsoft Word is the standard environment for full functionality. LibreOffice Writer and WPS Office can open DOCM files and display content, but support for executing the embedded proprietary VBA macros may be limited or require code refactoring. Security settings in most software will disable macros by default upon opening to prevent malicious code execution.
