MOS to JPG Converter

The MOS format is a proprietary raw image container created by Leaf Imaging (now Phase One) for use with their Credo and Aptus series digital backs. It captures unprocessed data directly from the CCD or CMOS sensor, storing it in a TIFF-based structure that retains high dynamic range and original color depth (16-bit). The file acts as a digital negative, preserving all metadata including white balance, exposure settings, and sensor calibration data, necessitating demosaicing algorithms during post-processing to render a viewable image.

MOS files require specialized raw processing software due to their proprietary encoding. Phase One Capture One is the primary software for full support, given the manufacturer lineage. Adobe products (Photoshop, Lightroom) support MOS via the Adobe Camera Raw plugin. For free alternatives, users can utilize RawTherapee or Darktable, which include the necessary decoding libraries (LibRaw) to interpret the sensor data on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

JPG is functionally identical to the JPEG format, differing only in the file extension length, a legacy constraint from the MS-DOS 8.3 filename limit (which allowed only three characters for extensions). It implements the same ISO/IEC 10918 standard, using lossy compression based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Huffman coding to store photorealistic images. The file structure contains markers such as Start of Image (SOI) and End of Image (EOI) and supports color spaces like sRGB and CMYK, making it interchangeable with .jpeg files in all software contexts.

As one of the most ubiquitous file types in computing, JPG files open natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux without external software. Default viewers like Microsoft Photos, Apple Preview, and Linux image viewers handle the format automatically. For editing or conversion, industry-standard tools including Adobe Photoshop, Paint.NET, and XnView provide extensive support. Web browsers universally render JPGs without plugins.
