What is an M2TS file?
The M2TS (MPEG-2 Transport Stream) file format is a high-definition digital video container format used for multiplexing audio, video, and other streams, primarily associated with the Blu-ray Disc Audio-Video (BDAV) container format. It is based on the MPEG-2 transport stream container and is used for structuring content on Blu-ray Discs and AVCHD camcorders (Sony/Panasonic). M2TS files typically contain video compressed using H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1, or MPEG-2 codecs, allowing for variable bitrates and high-resolution playback.
How to open an M2TS file
Windows usually supports M2TS playback natively through the Movies & TV app if the necessary codec extensions are installed. However, for reliable playback across macOS and Windows without codec errors, VLC Media Player is the standard solution as it natively handles the MPEG-2 TS encapsulation. High-end video editors like DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro also support M2TS import for editing camcorder footage.
