What is a DWG file?
DWG (Drawing) is a proprietary binary file format used for storing two- and three-dimensional design data and metadata. Native to the AutoCAD software package, it was established by Autodesk in 1982. The format utilizes a complex internal structure that evolves with software versions (e.g., the AC1032 structure for AutoCAD 2018), encapsulating vector image coordinates, geometric dimensions, and maps. Due to its proprietary nature, third-party interoperability is largely maintained through reverse-engineered libraries provided by the Open Design Alliance (ODA).
How to open a DWG file
Windows and macOS do not provide native kernel support for rendering DWG vector data. To view these files without a full CAD license, users should utilize the free Autodesk DWG TrueView or the web-based AutoCAD Web app. For editing, industry-standard software includes AutoCAD, DraftSight, and BricsCAD. The ODA File Converter is also utilized for converting version-incompatible DWG files.
