The format encapsulates distinct metadata tags, EXIF data, and a full-resolution JPEG preview within a CIFF (Camera Image File Format) hierarchy.
How to open a CR3 file
Windows and macOS require the installation of the Canon RAW Codec or specific OS-level extensions (such as the Microsoft Raw Image Extension) to view CR3 thumbnails natively. For editing and full processing, Canon provides the Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software.
