CR3 files store unprocessed sensor data and support C-RAW (Compact RAW) compression, which reduces file size by approximately 40% compared to standard RAW without significant degradation in dynamic range. The format encapsulates distinct metadata tags, EXIF data, and a full-resolution JPEG preview within a CIFF (Camera Image File Format) hierarchy.

How to open a CR3 file

Windows and macOS require the installation of the Canon RAW Codec or specific OS-level extensions (such as the Microsoft Raw Image Extension) to view CR3 thumbnails natively. For editing and full processing, Canon provides the Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software. Third-party post-production suites like Adobe Lightroom Classic (version 8.0+), Capture One, and DxO PhotoLab offer comprehensive support for CR3 demosaicing and color grading.
