What is an ACE file?

The ACE file extension denotes a proprietary data compression archive format originally developed by Marcel Lemke of e-merge GmbH for the WinAce software. Utilizing a compression algorithm derived from LZ77 dictionary coding and Huffman encoding, the format historically offered higher compression ratios than the standard ZIP Deflate algorithm. ACE archives support robust features including 4096-bit Blowfish encryption, multi-volume spanning, and integrity verification via CRC32 checksums, though the format is now considered legacy following the discovery of the critical CVE-2018-20250 path traversal vulnerability in the widely used unacev2.dll library.

How to open an ACE file

Operating systems do not provide native support for ACE archives; users must utilize third-party file compression software for extraction. While the original WinAce utility is discontinued, specific multi-format archivers such as PeaZip or BitZipper maintain backward compatibility for decompression. Notably, major utilities like WinRAR and 7-Zip have deprecated or excluded native ACE support to mitigate security risks associated with the format's legacy dynamic link libraries.
