What is an SVGZ file?

The SVGZ format is strictly a GZIP-compressed version of a standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file. It utilizes the Deflate compression algorithm (RFC 1951) to reduce the file size of the verbose XML text data typically found in standard SVGs, often achieving size reductions of 50-80%. While functionally identical to SVG in terms of graphical rendering capabilities and DOM structure, the binary compression prevents the file from being readable in standard text editors without prior decompression.

How to open an SVGZ file

Most modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) render SVGZ files natively, provided the web server serves them with the correct Content-Encoding: gzip header. For offline editing, vector graphics tools like Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape automatically handle the decompression and display the graphic. If manual inspection is required, the file can be renamed with a .gz extension and decompressed using utilities like 7-Zip or GNU Gzip.

What is an EMF file?

The Enhanced Metafile (EMF) is a 32-bit vector graphics format developed by Microsoft as a successor to the 16-bit Windows Metafile (WMF). It stores a sequence of device-independent GDI (Graphics Device Interface) drawing commands, allowing graphics to be rendered seamlessly across different output devices like printers and high-resolution displays. EMF resolves the coordinate limit issues of WMF and is commonly used within the Microsoft Office ecosystem for clipart and vector data storage.

How to open an EMF file

EMF files are natively supported by the Microsoft Windows operating system and can be opened with Windows Photo Viewer, Microsoft Paint, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint). On macOS, Apple Preview can convert and display EMF files. Cross-platform editing is possible using LibreOffice Draw or Inkscape, which can interpret the GDI commands and convert them to standard SVG paths.
