What is an ODS file?
The OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) format is an XML-based file standard for spreadsheets, maintained by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). Standardized as ISO/IEC 26300, ODS utilizes a ZIP-compressed container holding separate XML files for content (content.xml), styles, and metadata. It serves as the native file format for the LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice suites, offering a vendor-neutral alternative to proprietary formats by strictly adhering to the OpenDocument Format (ODF) specifications.
How to open an ODS file
ODS files are natively supported by open-source suites such as LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice on Linux, Windows, and macOS. Microsoft Excel (versions 2007 SP2 and later) includes built-in support for opening and saving ODS files, though some formatting variations may occur due to ODF version differences. Google Sheets also provides cloud-based support for importing and editing this format.
