What is a KEY file?

A KEY file is a presentation document created by Apple Keynote, part of the iWork productivity suite. Technically, the format has evolved through two primary iterations: a package directory (bundle) containing XML data and media assets (Keynote '09), and a single-file Zipped archive using Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) for efficient serialization (Keynote 2013 onwards). It utilizes a proprietary schema to store slide geometry, animations, and media, distinct from the Office Open XML standard.

How to open a KEY file

Native access is exclusive to macOS, iOS, and iPadOS devices via the Apple Keynote application. Users on Windows or Linux can view and edit these files via iCloud Keynote in a web browser. Conversion to PDF or PPTX is often required for offline viewing on non-Apple systems. LibreOffice offers limited import capabilities for older version 09 files but struggles with modern Protobuf-based KEY files.

What is a PPSM file?

The PPSM (PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Slide Show) file format is a presentation file type developed by Microsoft, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard defined in ISO/IEC 29500. Unlike standard PPTM files, PPSM files are configured to open directly in slide show mode rather than edit mode. The structure utilizes a ZIP-compressed XML framework containing a vbaProject.bin binary part to store Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros, along with separate folders for slides, media assets, and relationship (.rels) files.

How to open a PPSM file

PPSM files are natively supported by Microsoft PowerPoint (2007 and later) on Windows and macOS, which executes the contained macros upon opening if security settings permit. For users without the full Microsoft Office suite, files can be viewed using the free PowerPoint Viewer or LibreOffice Impress. On mobile devices, the Microsoft PowerPoint app provides compatibility, though macro execution is generally restricted on iOS and Android platforms.
