Unlike the standard DOTX template, the 'M' designation indicates the explicit authorization to store and execute Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros. This distinction is a security feature designed to prevent the accidental execution of malicious scripts in standard templates.

Microsoft Word (2007 and later) is the primary software for opening and executing macros within DOTM files. On macOS, Microsoft Word for Mac provides equivalent functionality. For non-Microsoft environments, LibreOffice Writer and WPS Office can open DOTM files and render the content, though VBA macro execution compatibility may vary significantly compared to the native Microsoft engine.
