What is a TS file?

The TS (Transport Stream) format is a standard container specified in MPEG-2 Part 1 (ISO/IEC 13818-1) for the transmission and storage of audio, video, and Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) data. Designed for unreliable transmission environments like broadcast and streaming, TS encapsulates data in fixed-size 188-byte packets to facilitate error correction and stream synchronization. It is the standard format for digital broadcasting systems such as DVB, ATSC, and IPTV, and often contains MPEG-2 or H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) video streams.

How to open a TS file

Many native video players have limited support for raw MPEG Transport Streams. VLC media player is the primary tool for opening TS files across Windows, macOS, and Linux, as it natively handles the demultiplexing of the packetized stream. What is a FLAC file?

The Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is an open-source audio coding format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation that compresses digital audio without any loss of data (bit-perfect preservation). It employs linear prediction and Rice coding (Golomb-Rice) rather than the perceptual psychoacoustic modeling used in MP3 or AAC.
