What is a PPT file?
The PPT format is the legacy binary file standard used by Microsoft PowerPoint from versions 97 through 2003. It utilizes the Compound File Binary Format (CFBF), a structured storage container that organizes data into streams and storages, functioning primarily as a file system within a file. PPT files store presentation data-including text, embedded images, audio, and formatting-in binary records rather than XML, which results in larger file sizes and higher corruption risks compared to the modern OOXML standard.
How to open a PPT file
Modern versions of Microsoft PowerPoint retain backward compatibility for opening and saving PPT files. Native support is also available in macOS via Keynote and in Linux distributions via LibreOffice Impress or OpenOffice Impress. The Enhanced Metafile (EMF) is a 32-bit vector graphics format developed by Microsoft as a successor to the 16-bit Windows Metafile (WMF). EMF files are natively supported by the Microsoft Windows operating system and can be opened with Windows Photo Viewer, Microsoft Paint, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint).
