What is a MOD file?

The MOD file extension refers to a standard definition tapeless video format used by JVC, Panasonic, and Canon in their digital camcorders. Technically, a MOD file is a modified MPEG-2 Program Stream container (similar to VOB files used in DVDs) containing MPEG-2 video and Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio. While the video data adheres to standard MPEG-2 compliance, the specific directory structure and file extension were proprietary implementations for camcorder file management systems. Aspect ratio metadata is often stored in the accompanying .MOI sidecar file.

How to open a MOD file

Because the underlying stream is standard MPEG-2, many media players can open MOD files if the extension is simply renamed to .MPG or .MPEG. However, to ensure correct aspect ratio display and audio synchronization without renaming, it is recommended to use VLC Media Player or MPlayer, which natively recognize the format header. Specialized software like CyberLink PowerDirector was often bundled with camcorders for editing these files.

What is a WAV file?

The Waveform Audio File Format (WAV) is a raw audio bitstream standard developed by Microsoft and IBM, serving as a subset of the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) specification. It primarily stores uncompressed Linear Pulse Code Modulation (LPCM) audio data, making it the industry standard for archival and high-fidelity mastering on Windows systems. The format supports varying bit depths and sample rates, with the Red Book standard (44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo) being the most prevalent implementation.

How to open a WAV file

WAV files enjoy near-universal native support across all major operating systems due to their status as a foundational audio standard. Windows Media Player, Apple QuickTime, and Linux-based media players (via ALSA/PulseAudio) open WAV files by default without requiring external codec packs or third-party software.
