What is a JFIF file?

The JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF) is a standardized image format that encapsulates JPEG-compressed data, defined by the C-Cube Microsystems standard to facilitate file exchange across different platforms. It resolves ambiguities in the raw JPEG interchange format by mandating specific markers (APP0 marker segment) and defining metadata parameters such as pixel density, aspect ratio, and color space (typically YCbCr). While essentially identical to standard JPG files in compression structure, JFIF strictly excludes advanced metadata like EXIF to maintain maximum compatibility with legacy decoders.

How to open a JFIF file

JFIF files are universally supported across all major operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, which open them natively in default viewers like Microsoft Photos, Apple Preview, and Eye of GNOME. Because the underlying data stream is standard JPEG compression, users can often rename the extension to .jpg without file corruption. Comprehensive support is also built into all modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and image editing software like Adobe Photoshop and CorelDRAW.

What is a PSD file?

The Photoshop Document (PSD) is the proprietary file format of Adobe Photoshop, capable of storing an image with support for all available imaging options including layers, adjustment layers, layer masks, alpha channels, paths, and vector text. It utilizes Run-Length Encoding (RLE) for compression and allows for a maximum file size of 2 GB and dimensions up to 30,000 pixels. The format maintains the editing history and non-destructive elements of a project, unlike flattened raster formats. The internal structure is divided into five parts: File Header, Color Mode Data, Image Resources, Layer and Mask Information, and Image Data.

How to open a PSD file

Adobe Photoshop is the primary software for full PSD support. However, several other programs offer varying degrees of compatibility. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and Paint.NET (with a plugin) can open PSD files but may not render complex layer styles or adjustment layers correctly. CorelDRAW and Affinity Photo also provide robust support. For simple viewing without editing, standard image viewers like XnView or IrfanView can often display the flattened composite preview embedded within the file.
