What is an HWP file?

The HWP format is a proprietary document file generated by Hancom Office Hangul, the dominant word processing software in South Korea, widely used by government and public institutions. Older versions rely on a compound binary file structure (OLE2) similar to early Microsoft Word DOC files, while distinct encoding mechanisms are used to support the Korean alphabet (Hangul). The format is distinct from the newer XML-based HWPX and often requires specific conversion libraries for interoperability outside the Hancom ecosystem.

How to open an HWP file

Native support is restricted to Hancom Office (Windows/macOS/Linux) and the free Hancom Office Viewer. For users without this software, Hancom provides a cloud-based web viewer called Hancom Docs. Third-party support is limited; however, LibreOffice (via libhwp) offers partial rendering capabilities, and the Naver Whale browser includes a built-in extension for viewing HWP files directly.
