What is an FODT file?

The FODT format (Flat XML OpenDocument Text) is a document file type defined by the OASIS OpenDocument Format (ODF) v1.2 specifications (ISO/IEC 26300). Unlike the standard ODT format, which acts as a ZIP-compressed container holding multiple XML sub-files and assets, FODT stores the entire document structure-including text, layout styles, and Base64-encoded images-within a single, uncompressed XML file. This human-readable architecture facilitates version control integration (e.g., Git) and direct XML parsing without requiring decompression libraries.

How to open an FODT file

FODT files are natively supported by the LibreOffice suite and Apache OpenOffice, which serve as the primary reference implementations for the ODF standard. Users on Windows, macOS, or Linux can open these files directly in LibreOffice Writer. Due to the uncompressed XML structure, the files can also be inspected or modified using code editors like Visual Studio Code or Notepad++, though this renders the raw markup rather than the formatted text.

What is an LRF file?

The LRF (Broad Band eBook) format is a deprecated proprietary eBook format developed by Sony for its PRS-500 and PRS-505 e-reader series. It is a binary format that utilizes a specific XML-based markup internally for layout rendering, supporting hard-coded pagination, vector images, and zlib compression. Unlike reflowable formats, LRF defines static page layouts, which can lead to scaling issues on displays with resolutions differing from the original Sony hardware specifications.

How to open an LRF file

Sony has abandoned LRF in favor of the EPUB standard, meaning modern devices do not support it natively. The most reliable method for opening LRF files on desktop systems is using Calibre or the Summoner application. For viewing on modern e-readers or tablets, conversion to EPUB or PDF via Calibre is the standard technical workflow.
