What is a CR2 file?

The CR2 (Canon Raw 2) format is a proprietary raw image file type developed by Canon Inc., introduced in 2004 with the EOS 20D to supersede the CRW format. Structured on the TIFF (Tag Image File Format) specification, it contains lossless compressed raw sensor data and proprietary binary tags known as 'MakerNotes' that record exposure settings, lens data, and white balance. The format writes data in Big-Endian byte order and was the standard for Canon DSLRs until the introduction of the CR3 format in 2018.

How to open a CR2 file

CR2 files require software capable of parsing Canon's specific sensor data. Canon provides the Digital Photo Professional (DPP) tool for native processing. Third-party support is extensive, with Adobe Photoshop (via Camera Raw), Lightroom, and Capture One being industry standards for decoding CR2. On the OS level, the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack enables viewing in Windows Explorer, while macOS supports CR2 files natively within the Finder and Preview apps via system-level raw engine updates.

What is a TIFF file?

The Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) is a container format for storing raster graphics images, originally created by Aldus Corporation in 1986 and currently controlled by Adobe Systems. Ideally suited for photography and desktop publishing, TIFF supports multiple color spaces (CMYK, RGB, Lab), various compression schemes (lossless LZW, Deflate, or lossy JPEG), and data tags that define image geometry. It conforms to the TIFF 6.0 specification and can accommodate multi-page documents and extensive metadata standards like Exif, IPTC, and XMP within its header structure.

How to open a TIFF file

Due to its status as a standard industry format for high-quality imaging, TIFF files possess robust native support across major operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Photos and macOS Preview. For advanced editing and layer manipulation, professional raster graphics editors such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and CorelDRAW are required. Specialized viewing software like IrfanView or XnView can also render multi-page TIFFs that standard system viewers may display incorrectly.
