What is a 3FR file?

The 3FR file extension denotes a proprietary raw image format developed by Hasselblad for its H-system and V-system digital camera backs. Structurally based on the TIFF/EP standard (ISO 12234-2), it contains unprocessed sensor data captured via the Bayer filter mosaic, utilizing a custom lossless compression algorithm to preserve 16-bit color depth. Unlike standard raw files, 3FR files are designed to be converted into the Hasselblad 3F container (FFF) via the Phocus software ecosystem to fully embed color calibration and lens correction metadata.

How to open a 3FR file

Due to its proprietary nature, native OS support for 3FR is limited without specific codec packs. The primary method for accessing these files is Hasselblad's proprietary Phocus software or the Adobe Creative Cloud suite (Photoshop and Lightroom) using the Adobe Camera Raw plugin. For viewing without editing, users on macOS can utilize Apple Preview (if the specific camera model is supported by Core Image), while Windows users may require the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack or third-party viewers like IrfanView.

What is a PSD file?

The Photoshop Document (PSD) is the proprietary file format of Adobe Photoshop, capable of storing an image with support for all available imaging options including layers, adjustment layers, layer masks, alpha channels, paths, and vector text. It utilizes Run-Length Encoding (RLE) for compression and allows for a maximum file size of 2 GB and dimensions up to 30,000 pixels. The format maintains the editing history and non-destructive elements of a project, unlike flattened raster formats. The internal structure is divided into five parts: File Header, Color Mode Data, Image Resources, Layer and Mask Information, and Image Data.

How to open a PSD file

Adobe Photoshop is the primary software for full PSD support. However, several other programs offer varying degrees of compatibility. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and Paint.NET (with a plugin) can open PSD files but may not render complex layer styles or adjustment layers correctly. CorelDRAW and Affinity Photo also provide robust support. For simple viewing without editing, standard image viewers like XnView or IrfanView can often display the flattened composite preview embedded within the file.
